I-19 Focused ion beam theory, application and techniques for physical and biological sciences

Instrumentation and Techniques

Instruments that utilized focused ion beams (FIB) have become a critical capability for characterization laboratories in both physical and biological sciences. There has been a huge expansion in the use of FIB tools in the areas of sample preparation, characterization and nano-fabrication. FIB has become the enabling tool for 3D characterization of materials through the use of imaging, x-ray microanalysis and electron backscatter diffraction. It is the intent of this symposium to demonstrate the breadth of application of FIB tools to both materials and biological sciences. Therefore, we welcome contributions that improve our basic understanding of ion/solid interactions, novel applications, new instrumentation, new sample preparation procedures, case studies and any other uses of FIB in the microscopy laboratory.
