M-9 Ceramic Materials and Complex Oxides

Materials Science and Nanotechnology

This symposium will explore the application of different microscopy techniques to ceramic materials and complex oxides, including thin films, heterostructures, interfaces and nanosystems. The symposium will provide a forum to discuss recent developments in these issues, ranging from growth, characterization, physical properties of complex oxide films and superlattices, interfaces and grain boundaries, paying special attention to the role of defects. Our understanding of ceramics and inorganic materials, including oxides, has improved much thanks to recent developments such as the success of spherical aberration correction in the electron microscope.

Direct imaging of light atoms, such as O, has been successfully achieved, and  electron probe sizes have been reduced below the 1 Ångström barrier in the scanning transmission electron microscope.  At the same time, improved post-specimen optics allow highly efficient electron energy loss spectroscopy, enabling the imaging of near edge spectral features with atomic resolution.
